Second Harvest supports a network of 6 metropolitan Food Centres in WA. These centres are not for profit and are run by volunteers. The network of Second Harvest Food Centres helps to break the cycle of poverty by providing low cost foods and groceries to those in need. These are not considered handouts as Second Harvest buy and sell foods and give shoppers the dignity of choice.
Each Food Centre is independent and is accountable for running their businesses. As well as cheap food, Second Harvest food centres offer a resource whereby people as volunteers can be gainfully employed, or gain new skills in order to return or join the workforce, thus benefiting their local community.
What we can’t do alone.. We can do together!
In 2009, Second Harvest diversified into Emergency Relief funding provided by LotteryWest and which is distributed through the food centre network. This has enabled it to commence assistance within nominated Maternity Hospitals providing hampers for needy families.
LotteryWest has continued to support this project and we have since recieved additional support from Westpac Bank, City of Cockburn and fundraisng activities which enables Second Harvest to continue to deliver this assitance to the community in 2016
